Outdoor Summer Fun: 5 Tips for Staying Hydrated on the Trail.

Hello Fellow Campers!  It's that time of year again.  Everyone is packing up and hitting the trails for some hiking and camping fun!  While we are out exploring the wild, it's important to stay hydrated to stay safe.  Here are some tips to help you stay hydrated while out on the trail.

  1.  Invest in a day pack that has a slot for a water reservoir.  The reservoirs are usually available in a 1 or  2 liter size and slip easily into the slot provided with the mouthpiece sliding out through a hole in the top of the pack. The bonus for these is that you can throw them in the ice chest the night before and keep them chilled!
  2. Don't rely on sugary or caffeinated drinks to keep you hydrated.  Limit these drinks to just one or two.  The rest of the day, drink plenty of water.  Keeping yourself hydrated all the time means that when you hit the trail, you're not prone to heat exhausted or stroke.
  3. Pack more water than you think you're going to need.  It's better to be overprepared than under.
  4. Invest in cooling towels to carry while on the trail. These work by water evaporation and can help if you're like me and have no heat tolerance.
  5. Dress appropriately.  This means loose, light weight clothing and something to protect your head from the sun.  The last trail I was on had more sun than shade.  Appropriately clothing and head gear would have helped me alot!

Bonus tip:  Take more breaks and rest longer on the break!  If the heat is getting to you while you're on the trail, the urge to speed up just to get off the trail is there.  But, it's a mistake to take that approach as it will add to the issue.  Choose spots that are shaded and allow you to sit down to rest if possible.

It's a short list but hopefully, it'll be helpful next time your out and about on the trail.

Many blessings,

Lisa
