Mini Pictorial Tour of My Backyard Garden

Hello and welcome!  In today’s blog, we’re going to a pictorial exploration of my garden!  As part of my goal to help myself and other folks eat more whole foods, gardening has become a way to explore and share what that means. So we’re going to step into my backyard and explore what you can grow in a very small space. My garden takes up a little over a quarter of my backyard and it's roughly 20' by 20'.  It's not a lot of space but in that small space, you can grow food that fresh and good for you!

Gardening has been an incredible journey for me.  I started out my journey not knowing anything and thinking..."how hard could this be?  Just plant a seed, right?"  Turns out there's a little more to it than that.  Soil quality, the amount of sunlight, plant spacing and how much you water them all counts, too! But those topics could be blog posts all on their own.  Today, I just want to show you my little patch of heaven. It's become a place of peace for me and I go there when I'm feeling really stressed out!

Gardens are not just for veggies!  I have made it a point to plant flowers along with my veggies.  The flowers attract the bees and bees are needed in the garden!

The reason bees are so pivotal is that some plants like the squash and pumpkins can only generate fruit if the flowers are pollinated either by hand or by the bees!  Squash plants produce male and female flowers that are too far apart to pollinate on their own!

Underneath the giant pumpkin leaves is a tiny watermelon flower.  I companion planted the pumpkins, watermelon and cantaloupe not realizing just how giant pumpkin plants can get!

Here's another garden boo boo.  I planted peas, cucumbers and garden beans on the same trellis.  They didn't grow well together and I ended up loosing my peas way before the heat had a chance to get them. The cucumbers are not liking sharing the trellis with the beans either so I'm not really sure how well they are going to do.

Squash is one of my favorite foods.  They are one of those plants that I was so surprised by how big they truly get!  I love those big beautifully green leaves!

This little kale plant has been the hardies thing!  It has survived massive amounts of rain and the Texas heat!

Strawberries!

Love these little white strawberry flowers!

Yellow squash!  Beautiful!

I really hope you've enjoyed this little mini pictorial tour of my garden!  I hope to share more with you as the season goes by and see if we have pumpkins for Halloween!

Many blessings,
Lisa
