My First Solo Trip--Tips for Traveling Alone

My first solo trip was more like a spiritual sojourn.  It was spur of the moment but incredibly pivotal for me as a person.  I enjoyed every single minute of it.  Of course, my destination was a place I was very familiar with and that helped me to feel safer traveling alone.  I went to Kerrville. I spent four nights there. I've blogged about Kerrville before so this blog is more about staying safe on the road when you're traveling solo.  Solo trips are worth the extra headache that safety precautions bring because when you're traveling solo, it's your own agenda that you have to worry about. So here are some safety basics when you're traveling solo: 1.Travel during the day.  It sounds like a cliché but it isn't.  Daytime travel brings visibility and a bit of camouflage to your solo status.  Service stations are busier during the daytime hours. 2.  Stop in well lit, busy service stations. This one is especially important if you've got to...

The Importance of a Spiritual Journey

Image
Sometimes during your travels, you find a place that feels like home.   It’s the place that you make a point of revisiting several times a year just because while you’re there, it seems to recharge your batteries more than any other place.   In truth, recharging the self is usually the primary reason for taking a vacation to begin with.   However, a spiritual journey is not the same thing as taking a vacation.   I learned this truth recently.   I took my grandchildren on the semi-annual jaunt to Kerrville but this time, it was more than just a vacation. My trip to Kerrville came approximately a week after my trip to Colorado.   The trip to Colorado was amazing and a welcome change. I learned some things on that trip that didn’t manifest until the trip to Kerrville.   The trip was the last big one I intended to make until I returned to the real world with a full time job and a college class schedule on top.    I knew it when I left. ...

Highlights from my trip to Grand Junction

Image
Life has been pretty hectic since I came back from Grand Junction.  This is the first time where I've had some time to just sit down and think.  Wow! What an amazing time I had during my visit!  My friend, Ginger, was traveling to Grand Junction for a family member's graduation from high school.  She invited me to tag along and I am so glad I did.  Ginger was a long time resident of Grand Junction before moving back to my neck of the woods so between her and our wonderful hostess, Mollie, I was treated to some of the best of what Grand Junction had to offer.  Now I must confess that the weather didn't cooperate much while we were there so what we did do is just a tiny, weather permitting part of what this region has on the menu when it comes to entertainment and things to do. First, no visit to Grand Junction would ever be complete without a trip to the Colorado National Monument.  If you are afraid of heights, this excursion will be terrifyingly bea...

What I Learned From Our Easter Trip

Image
If you are new to my blog, I welcome you to Day Hiker Grammie.  My blog as well as my YouTube and Facebook sites are about travel, hiking and camping.  Last weekend, my family and I spent Easter weekend camping at Lake Mineral Wells State Park.  It was a fun filled weekend that I enjoyed immensely.  I absolutely love camping and I think it's a shame that I discovered it so late in my life!  today's blog is going to be about our experiences out at Lake Mineral Wells and what I learned from it. We arrived out at Lake Mineral Wells early in the afternoon on Good Friday and set up camp.  Luckily, we've had a little practice with this and we had some great help from my nephew so it didn't take long to get the camp in tiptop shape.  Since we still had plenty of daylight hours left, we decided to go hiking so we hit the trail.  Here are some great pics of the trail and the spectacular view from the summit. Probably the most important...

Lake Mineral Wells State Park

Image
Hi, there and welcome to Day Hiker Grammie. Today I'd like to write about our latest camping trip. When it comes to camping, my brother's family and my grandchildren, my oldest son and I do some family trips together.  It was quite a crew that packed up and headed out with 6 adults, 1 teenager, and three kids between 10 and 11. This year, we had a non-traditional Easter celebration.  We loaded up the crew and went to Lake Mineral Wells State Park.  This little gem of a park is located bout an hour west of Fort Worth so it's perfect for a weekend getaway. It's remote enough that nature surrounds you and you do not hear traffic sounds but close enough to civilization that if you forget something the nearest store is 15 minutes away.  We return here at least once a year because it's a great park to stay in.  It's kept clean. The staff is outstanding and the amenities are decent.  Plus, the rates won't break your budget. The park has reasonable prices for the...

Welcome to Day Hiker Grammie!

Hello and welcome!  My name is Lisa and I am Day Hiker Grammie.  I am the proud grandmother of 7 grandchildren!  Most of them call me Grammie!   My grandchildren are my favorite traveling companions and they travel with me as often as time and budget allows. When I created my YouTube channel, it was initially going to be about hiking and camping.  Hence the name, Day Hiker Grammie.  However, I have a general love of travel as well as hiking and camping so I decided I would just blog about and make videos of all my adventures.  You can find me on YouTube under Day Hiker Grammie. Recently, I found myself unemployed.  Not the most ideal position to be in but perhaps it is the ideal time to create a channel and a blog that talks about the things that I love to do the most.  I love to travel. I like to go hiking. I like to camp.  I find myself in a unique position to do a little of everything before I have to knuckle in and commit myself ...
